WP03 – Development of Circular Products and Services

Different circular strategies may not have the same potential for resource productivity. To optimise resource productivity these differences need to be measured. With this in mind, this work package develops tools to measure product circularity. The tool is designed to be used in the earlystages of the product development process, and is based on the product’s technical as well as value chain characteristics. Secondly, a set of practical design guidelines are formulated that support the development of (more) circular products and services throughout the innovation process.

This work package can affect the following aspects of your business:

• Business model, material selection & product development, packaging, logistics & through life operations.

This work package has a focus on product development, material selection and design choices that define what paths (new) products can take. There is a strong link with business model innovation, as circular products will increasingly involve models such as pay-per-use and access-over-ownership. These models may influence material and component selection, involve different logistics operations and change the characteristics of the product life cycle.

This work package supports implementing circular economy considerations in your product development process. The tools help you quantify how ‘circular’ your product or service offering is and gain insight into how your solution performs against other concepts or benchmarked against similar products. Depending on the context of your business, such an assessment can cover a range of aspects. Think of the different circularity options that exist on a material level, such as using recyclates and recyclable materials or renewable bio-based materials. Other aspects that need to be quantified are the contribution of operations that improve the use of product capacity through shared use or redistribution, as well as those that extend the Product life span, such as repair, remanufacturing and upgrading. This work package helps you make a structured and comprehensive assessment to support decision making by identifying resource productivity improvement options on the product and service level.

In short, this work package provides you with:

• A clear understanding of how ‘circular’ your products or services are;

• Identify options for resource productivity improvement on the product and service level;

• Provide you with guidelines of how to improve the resource productivity of your products or services.

For CIRCit researchers to be able to support you, they need to access information regarding what materials your product will be made of, where those materials will be sourced, what manufacturing processes will be used to produce the product, and how the product will be supported throughout its life and what type of systems are in place for end-of-life treatment.

Similarly, for services, our researchers will need to understand what materials will be used for or involved in delivering your service, the origins of those materials and their end-of-life treatment.

In other words, our researchers need:

• Access to information about the material requirements of your product and/ or service;

• Know how products and/ or services will be supported throughout their life cycle;

• Insight into what end-of-life systems will be in place;

• And, possibly, if your product and/or service offers additional resource productivity benefits.
