The Magic Factory handles 135 000 tonnes of food waste and manure each year which are recycled into new food and 9 million Nm3 of biomethane.
The Magic Factory outside Tønsberg, Norway, is a biogas plant that recycles food waste from households and manure from farms in the neighbourhood into climate-friendly biogas and valuable bio-fertilizers. The Magic Factory is made in cooperation between Greve Biogass and Vesar, and the goal is to become an international pioneer for green carbon capture. The biogas is used as environmentally friendly fuel for vehicles such as public busses and trucks. The bio-fertilizers are used at approx. 50 local farms as a substitute for fossil based mineral fertilizer, while a small amount is utilized in small R&D greenhouses , together with CO2 from the biogas upgrading plant, for new food production. An Educational Center for Sustainability at the site is furthermore in the works and will educate students from primary and secondary school towards better source sorting and increased material recycling. The factory contributes to significant reduction of climate emissions, green growth, and value creation in the region, highlighting that the waste we sort at source.
