Danish PLASTIX recycles used fishing nets and ropes into new plastic material, therein preventively combatting ocean plastic waste and reducing CO2 emissions.
Ocean plastic waste, with its devastating effects on marine wildlife, is a highly debated topic and a catalyst for the fight for green solutions. One of the solutions is the Danish company PLASTIX, that tackles the mechanical recycling of post-use fishing nets and ropes, a waste fraction estimated to account for 11% of all ocean plastic waste. By collaborating, with NGOs, the maritime industry, and ports collecting used and obsolete fishing gear, PLASTIX is able to prevent this waste stream from being lost on landfill or the environment. The innovative mechanical recycling process involves the complex sorting and fractioning of nets and ropes, their shredding, washing and extrusion into new ‘Green Plastic’ raw material, ready to be used in new products such as chairs, kayaks, and phone protection covers. A sustainable and environmentally friendly solution, saving up to 95% CO2 emissions compared to virgin plastic, and further preventing the loss of valuable resources, and ocean plastic waste.
